Don’t Burn This Book

A lot of people have heard of Terry Jones and his campaign against Islam. His book “Islam is of the Devil” actually sells well in the US. Personally I am no great fan of Fundamentalist Islamic belief about as much a fan as I am of Christian Fundamentalism. Both are so far from what God (ether Muhammad’s God or The Christian God) might want. The Bible and the Quran talk of a Just God and Fundamentalism preaches a far from just doctrine. Rather than spreading Hatred let’s try Love as God asks of us. 1 John 4:7 Beloved, let us love one another: for love is of God; and every one that loveth is born of God, and knoweth God.

But I digress back to Mr Jones. He may not be as bad as Fred Phelps (of the WBC) but he is just as intolerant and less of a fanatic (but still a Fanatic). The problem is he plays on logical fears and takes those feelings and uses them to his advantage.

No one today would take kindly to the idea of book burning as it brings up images of Hitler’s book burnings and is the #1 act people think of when they think of intolerance. However, connect this with something like 9/11 and state that the cause of this was a book, and you have the poison needed to make people accept book burnings. This is just what Jones did in July. Jones turns this bigotry into just the opposite of what it is he calls it “freedom of Expression” In reality it is an action against freedom of expression. As the Secular News reports “International Burn is not about freedom of expression. It is about hatred of Islam, not just the radical actions of some Muslims.” Though I would not like to further Islam it isn’t a religion I agree with I am for the freedom of expression and when Jones and his cronnies use this to promote book burning I get MAD.

Al-Azhar’s Supreme Council in Egypt the world’s pre-eminent Sunni Muslim institution of learning has accused this so called church of “stirring up hate and discrimination” and called on other American churches to condemn the event.

Let’s watch the rednecks who don’t know moderate Muslims from fanatics start calling them hypocrites.
