Salvation is NOT EASY !

For some reason I found myself in a spiritual reverie the other day, spurred by watching a TV Evangelist make a joke of my faith on national television. I talk about Faith and religion occasionally I am not a pastor, but as you all know I take offense to misrepresentation of faith. On quality and purpose of salvation as preached by most churches I don’t offer an opinion. On the way to salvation if it exists or is needed I do have an opinion. Personally I believe in salvation but not a mystical salvation but one that is worked out in “pain and suffering.” I cannot and will not believe that salvation is easy.

Here are two pastors thoughts on the issue (notice the contradictions).

“In fine, so narrow is the way which leads unto life, that the Lord, speaking by the prophets Amos and Zachariah, calls those who are to be saved brands snatched from the burning, and our Lord everywhere declares the difficulty of salvation.”
Martin Luther (in the “First Principles of the Reformation or the Ninety-five Theses and the Three Primary Works of Dr. Martin Luther”)

“God imparted the faith they needed for salvation, God wants to impart now faith or healing, its just as easy to get healed as it is to get saved”
Benny Hinn (from a sermon in Hawaii)

Benny Hinn and a lot of the fundamentalist pastors we hear on television and over the internet preach simple salvation “just believe.” The point they miss is the one Luther knew, that belief is not easy, thus salvation isn’t either.

We have to examine our faith each day to know the truth. So called Biblical truths are not simple to see. The Bible says God created earth in seven days. If we choose to believe blindly we make God a liar, for science has proven that the earth took many more than seven days to evolve (please spare me the anti-evolution lectures they will be deleted). A long time back I concluded that the bible is true only if it is read as a metaphor. It isn’t a history text I studied history I know that it could not be as there are anachronism in several parts. It isn’t a science text as it records science as magic because that is
the only way early man could understand it. It is however a guide to most things. Its truths are hard to find and its meanings aren’t always clear. So our simple belief ministers, are preaching that salvation is simple only because they don’t understand, which is the easy way out.

What does the Bible say?

2 Timothy 2:15 “Study to shew (show) thyself (yourself) approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.”

It Is Hard

Acts 14: 22…..“Through many tribulations we must enter the kingdom of God.” ~ .

You must apply what you learn.

2 Peter 1: 3-11 / 3His divine power has given us everything we need for life and godliness through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness. 4Through these he has given us his very great and precious promises, so that through them you may participate in the divine nature and escape the corruption in the world caused by evil desires.
5For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith goodness; and to goodness, knowledge; 6 and to knowledge, self-control; and to self-control, perseverance; and to perseverance, godliness; 7and to godliness, brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness, love. 8For if you possess these qualities in increasing measure, they will keep you from being ineffective and unproductive in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. 9 But if anyone does not have them, he is nearsighted and blind, and has forgotten that he has been cleansed from his past sins. 10 Therefore, my brothers, be all the more eager to make your calling and election sure. For if you do these things, you will never fall, 11 and you will receive a rich welcome into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. 2 Peter 1: 3-11

  1. I completely agree with your opinion. Bible basically never says about being easy. “Whereas narrow is the gate and cramped the road leading off into life, and few are the ones finding it”, this simply proves how hard it is to attain salvation.

  2. I see the same things in the Bible. Many famous pastors have told us that all you have to do is pray the sinner’s prayer and you are in. There are lots of places in the Bible that seem to contradict this. For example, parables about the good soil/seed and the vine/branches.

On the other hand, I don;t think you can take the liberty to interpret the Bible solely as a metaphor. Did God tell you to do this? Is this super-bibilical wisdom?

    • Good point but where in the bible does it say it is not a metaphor and the parables of jesus did he say they weren’t stories but histories. Aside from this have you ever heard of “Q” the real source of the gospels. There is as much evidence for both ways of approaching the bible. Can you give any proof that the bible should be read literally. The bible may say so but if you asked your teacher why what he was teaching was true and he said “because I said so” would you believe him? Faith with out evidence or question is blind faith. I am not convinced with out devining the truth which even the bible encourages us to do.

  3. I lost my faith a long time ago (in my late teens) when I started to question the whys and wherefores of the things I had been lead to believe, the one thing I could never come to terms with was that a person couldn’t enter the kingdom of God if he didn’t believe. No matter how good a person they had been if they didn’t believe it was a ‘NO’ yet someone who had been a rat bag only had to say they were sorry and they could.

    • I had the same problem until I started to read the bible as a lesson book not a bunch of rules. If you take one verse that says you must simply believe, you miss the truth. I don’t hold much stock in the definition of belief espoused by many so called faithful. True belief is a combination of understanding and comitment, not some simple prayer said at an alter call. So it would be very hard for a life long “rat bag” to truly believe. That said, is it the belief in Jesus or in everything he taught? That is how I understand it. Simply saying I believe is meaningless. If as the Bible say we are to “work out our salvation in pain and suffering” then how valid are alter or death bed conversions? I don’t believe Salvation is an Insurance policy. To truly believe is to act as a Christian. If you know fire will burn you would you stick you hand in it. The problem is that if simple belief was all that was needed why does the Bible have a story such as the likes of, the good Samaritan . I suspect the story is telling us that belief is an act not an idea alone.

PS. This was typed with a WII remote pardon any minor errors.

  4. oh my….i don’t know where to start…salvation itself is EASY!! it’s easy if i can humble myself to come to terms with the fact that i am a no-good, low-down, dirty sinner that deserves to go to hell and that i in myself will never be good enough to earn my way to heaven or work my way there…it’s only hard when i can’t get out of my own way and have to be prideful and think i am “all that” or i simply choose to not believe that i NEED a savior!! in order to be “saved” i must realize i AM a sinner, as we all are…the Bible says in Romans 3:10 As it is written, There is none righteous, no not one. and Romans 3:23 says, For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God. i also must realize that because God is a Holy God and sinless, He cannot allow sin into heaven and therefore in my sinful (unsaved) condition, i cannot go to heaven. Romans 6:23 says, For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. also, i must understand that God, is His infinite wisdom and power provided a way that we could all join Him in heaven, by sending his one and and only PERFECT Son to shed His blood, die on the cross, and rise again on the third day to pardon every sin i would ever commit. Romans 5:8 tells us But God commendeth (showed) his love toward us , in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. i must understand and accept all these things and confess my sins to God, BELIEVE in my heart, and call on Him to save my soul from hell!! the Bible says in Romans 10:9, 13 That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him form the dead, thou shalt be saved, for whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved. it’s as easy as that! and once you are saved, you are always saved, just as doing bad things doesn’t make you earthly father not your father anymore, doing bad things doesn’t make your heavenly Father, not your heavenly Father!!!

    • This may come as a surprise but I agree with you on how salvation works except that Salvation is not easy because true belief is difficult While Romans 10:9, 13 makes it sound easy it is simple but not easy to do . Sky diving is simple you jump out of a plane and pull the cord. It is far from Easy to do because we do not trust the parachute we do not beliieve it will save us from falling. Here is another verse Matthew 7:21-23 “Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven. Many will say unto me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.”

This does not mean that if you work iniquity you won’t be saved, it does however point out that you can think yourself saved and not be so. Why? because you do not really believe. The hardest thing for a Christian to do is to trust in God If you don’t trust him do your really believe? and as is pointed out in Romans you must “believe in thine heart ” to be saved.

    • If you could only hear yourself and realize that you are spouting off words that every church going Christian I know does. Your way is the popular way. The BROAD way. The NARROW way is the least popular. The one that takes a major leap of faith and sacrifice, as well as commitment. Jesus’ life was the epitome of those things. And I don’t know one single person who lives that way. Even if we sacrifice and commit, we still fall very short. But that doesn’t mean we aren’t supposed to give up this life. We are. And that is a HUGE thing for most people to do.

  5. I was thinking on this topic again and I think this verse says more of what I was trying to say on beleif is believe true if there is no signs of it? John wrote, “And hereby we do know that we know Him, if we keep His commandments. He that saith, I know Him, and keepeth not His commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him”(1 John 2:3,4). That is about as simple as it gets. Without signs (works and deeds) there is no evidence of belief and it is a lie , don’t forget it is possible to ly to yourself as much as others.

  6. The guys right, sadly. In Matthew 5:20 Jesus says, “For I say unto you,That except your righteousness shall exceed the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, ye shall in no case enter into the kingdom of heaven.” (KJV) Matthew 7:13-14, “Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat: 14 Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, andfew there be that find it.” (KJV)

  7. I don’t know about you guys, but I’m doomed- Matthew 7:13-14, Matthew 7:21-23, 1 Cor. 6:9-10, Rev. 21:8, Galations 5:19-21, Matthew 19:23, etc.

  8. you are not saved by your works but you salvation
is proven by your works. If you do not follow what the who bible teaches then you have to ask yourself are you really saved.

  9. Thanks Adam that is the basic message. Salvation is Not Easy. While it seems easy because belief and acceptance is all that is needed belief is not easy. You can say you believe all you want but if you are too afraid to cross a bridge do you really believe it is safe to do so?

  10. There is absolutely NOTHING easy about salvation.

First of all. It has been foretold that anyone who loves his life will lose it. For anyone to focus on salvation is to love his life!! Because that person is only seeking GOD to be saved. That said. That same person will likely follow the wrong path.

Satan rules the world. Society maintains a status quo which leads people to destruction. Churches have already fallen away and have sewn themselves into society. You cannot trust them to give you TRUTH and to enforce it.

Society teaches people to focus on things that are easy or convenient. Churches do this as well because they are part of Satan’s empire. The true path to Heaven is HARD. It is a very strong commitment that not everyone can live up to. The choice is there for all. But many will not take it because they will refuse to make the sacrifice. We saw this happen in the NT. And we are still seeing it today. People’s hearts are NOT on GOD. They care about themselves far more. Someone who is willing to be beaten up spiritually and made to feel like the lowest worth in the world is likely to know GOD. Because humility is at the core of servitude. Jesus was living proof. He was mocked, ridiculed, put down, abused, interrogated, and killed. There certainly was no room at all for him to be proud or think He was anything special in this world. And He told us to follow Him. We are to walk in TRUTH. The world hates knowing the Truth. Because it is TRUTH that threatens their status quo. They have allowed themselves to become embedded in the status quo of Satan’s world. For them to listen to Jesus is to make a major sacrifice. Just like He told the rich man to do.

Many want to believe that it’s not difficult to walk the narrow path. But it has already been foretold that the path to Heaven is narrow. And many will walk the broad and false path. Very few will make it. Because in order to be loved in Heaven, we have to be hated in this world. I know in my own life that very few people give a damn about me. My wife and kids do. And at one time I was seemingly loved by many. They acted like they cared about me because of a talent I had. But once I turned away from that talent, they all dropped me like I was nothing. That taught me an important lesson about people and their true nature. Most people I know aren’t much good. They serve themselves and could care less about others who suffer. Spiritual needs are not being fully realized by many. They try to overcompensate by using materialism to fill a large gap. That is the same as not seeing the TRUTH. And without TRUTH, there will be no salvation.

    • Please show some Scriptures to back up your argument…..also, the bit about focusing on salvation will cause you to lose your life is laughable. Read that verse again, then understand it’s true meaning. Think of the young rich ruler…….

      • ….also, just because people hate you does not qualify you as being righteous nor is it a sign of your salvation . the Jews hated the tax collectors and it wasn’t because they were righteous?? Too many christians focus on being hated to the point of antagonizing people just to be hated. Sometimea were hated beecause some of us forgot the part about love and humility…..that’s the hard part.
