Dan Brown in the NOVEL The Da Vinci Code asserts that Christ’s divinity was decided by the Council of Nicaea. He builds a whole conspiracy around it. Every once in a while I am asked if there is any truth to this. Sorry folks I studied CANADIAN history so I am no expert. But I like Dan Brown as a novelist but his history sucks. Lets remove the lynch pin to his argument and see if it holds up. The key to the claim of Christ’s divinity is in the so called Gospel of John. Christ was referred to as the word made flesh as is noted below.
John 1: 1-4, 14
In the beginning the Word already existed. He was with God, and he was God. He created everything there is. Nothing exists that he didn’t make. Life itself was in him..So the Word became human and lived here on earth among us
The oldest carbon-dated copy dates from 175-225 A.D. (Papyrus Bodmer XV, Gospel of John c. 175-225 A. D.) If you believe this translation of the Gospel of John, Jesus was spoken of as God over a hundred years before Constantine convened the Council of Nicaea.
Now whether or not you believe that Jesus was God there is definite evidence that Jesus was thought to be or could have been perceived to be God before Constantine’s time. Revisionist historians are often wrong, and since Dan Brown is a novelist and the original theory he bases his ideas (Holy Blood Holy Grail) on was written by journalists, I tend to think he too is wrong.
That is my answer…
