Name Calling is Wrong

David Scott on his website Young Fundamentalists, posted an article entitled “Is Name Calling Really Wrong.”In essence it is his reaction to being called down for using ad Hominem arguments.
He uses another fallacious point that people that use it do so only because “Latin makes you sound smart.” It is a waste of time to point out to people like Mr Scott that an ad hominem argument is the topic of a first year logic class, as he likely has never been in one. But a very good way to show this man his error is to look at his argument.

He claims “Jesus called names” and uses Matt.3:7, Matt.12:34, Matt.23:33, Luke.3:7 as his evidence.

As not to waste space on this weak argument I will paraphrase what the verses say in each of these Jesus refers to the audience as vipers, or a “generation of Vipers”. The point Jesus is making is that the audience is low and evil, it is a comparison and not a simple insult, like the word idiot that Mr Scott uses later. Idiot would imply that Mr Scott has some way of determining that the person he was attacking was sub intelligent, which he can’t. Jesus however could see that the people he was talking about matched the comparison.

Mr Scott says that “To simply call someone an idiot is not an ad hominem attack, because you are not making an argument. You are making an observation.” This much is correct, but as Mr Scott is discussing debating online using the word Idiot as a discriptor serves but one purpose to call down his opponent when he ceases to be able to debate, which is ad hominem.

What does the bible really say about calling names?

Matthew 5:22 (King James Version)

1. King James Version (KJV)

22But I say unto you, That whosoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the

judgment: and whosoever shall say to his brother, Raca, shall be in danger of the council: but whosoever shall say, Thou fool, shall be in danger of hell fire.

So Mr Scott let’s see you argue against the bible, which I am sure you will by claiming only you and your Fundamentalist brothers are the only ones that can interpret the bible and I have it wrong.

So Mr Scott I won’t call you an idiot, as this would be wrong but you are wrong in assuming that name calling isn’t wrong, as the bible points out it IS WRONG and in this case so ARE YOU.

  1. Bill, I have to agree with you that calling anybody an “idiot” for espousing certain views is not only very likely “wrong” but is non conducive to the exchange of reasoned dialog, if that’s what one is seeking. In young Mr. Scott’s post that may not be the case. It seems to me he is simply ranting – whoever would waste valuable bandwith to do just that? – but I will leave a comment on his blog supporting your position. In as kind a fashion as possible, considering his youth et al.

OK, so I’ve ranted before! Stop grinning!

  2. What is the title of this Blog? (-:

My objection is that even while we rant we need to do so inteligently .

I may say your wrong for voting McCain but I wouldn’t call you and idiot for doing so.

I may say what in Blue Blazes made you a republican.

  3. Well I really haven’t fully made up my mind on that. If I DO it will be more for Gov. Palin than the senator, because though a “maverick” he’s also somewhat part of the problem.

The governor, oth, if elected with her running mate might just have the courage to rip into her party – and the other guys – enough to give them a chance to straighten out and clean up their acts.. At least that would be my faint hope. I know you really hate her stand on many things – and I understand that – but I think you may be mistaken about her intentions on some things. I believe she would support the law of the land even if it goes against her personal creed.

Thats not to say that someday in rhw US Roe v. Wade might be overturned by the supremes. But I don’t think it would at her urging. Support, maybe, but not urging. Imo there is a groundswell building in “flyover country” against the abortion industry and the dems for their stands on third trimester and live-birth abortions. If one but “follows the money” with Planned Parenthood a sickeningly evil and greedy path is laid bare. And, “No”, I don’t want the return of back-alley abortions. [Btw, they still exist in some “enlightened” communities here]. There has to be another way that includes protection for the young woman[girl]victim. More and more we are finding out a significant number of abortions are the result of incestuous and abusive assaults, but that fact is hidden by the “A” industry and the crimes resume afterward in most cases. Makes me sick. But that’s another rant.
