The Last WWI Veteran or Lest We Forget

As was discussed on Stephen’s Blog The House of Commons voted unanimously to support the NDP motion asking the government for a full state funeral when the last First World War veteran dies.

Jack Layton (NDP Leader ) said that a state funeral would celebrate “the contribution of a whole generation of Canadians who served, whether overseas or here at home and their families as well.” Which is pretty much what I suggested in a commment on Stephen’s Blog, but I stepped short of calling it a state funeral in respect of all those that would pass before the last veteran

  1. One of my commenters objected that having a state funeral will glorify war. But if Jack Layton supports the concept, that speaks volumes: the NDP are passionately anti-war.
