I fear that capitalism and democracy stand in uneasy tension with one another: indeed, that capitalism tends to skew democracy.
Democracy, at least our version of it, is sometimes summed up as “one citizen, one vote.” But, in a capitalist society, big corporations tend to have undue influence. I.e., some are more equal than others.
Canada and (even more) the USA are more capitalist than democratic, in my opinion.
But I don’t want to sound like a whiner. Whatever the faults of our system may be, we have it pretty damned good. As Winston Churchill put it, “democracy is the worst system of government, except for all the others.”
Churchill’s words are still true, even if Canada is not a pure democracy.
