Found this quote as well on the web,

http://canadiandimension.com/articles/1951/

"Winnipeg’s inner city has astonishingly high rates of poverty and associated social pathologies — high rates of unemployment, low rates of labour-force participation, street-gang activity, prostitution (which starts in some cases before girls reach their teens), violence and dilapidated housing."

This Bill, to answer your previous question, is what I call Dysfunctional Behaviour. The crime rate is high, and family break down is also a contributing factor.

As the city decays, the decay spreads. People don't want to live beside a crack house, and nobody wants to buy there. So, property values drop. Crime rates increase....etc...etc. A huge number of Gangs are forming on the streets, and gang violence is on the rise.

I know you were saying that if someone has to sell drugs to survive because they can't find a job, it isn't their fault. However, there are more positive ways to make a living if an individual is willing to work. The problem is most jobs do not pay as much as drug dealing.

Many of the young women turn to prostitution because they do not have a solid education. Even if they could find work, jobs that require simple math skills may be beyond their ability. Prostitution is a job that provides a quick buck and requires little education. Many prostitutes are addicted to drugs, and have to turn tricks to keep themselves a ready supply of their fix.

When people don't work or have no sense of ownership, they lose any emotional tie to the things they own.

The article goes on to describe some of the many programs that are being implemented to curb the urban decline.

In my opinion the city is turning ugly so fast, that the programs are too little too late. It is a sad state of affairs, making what was once a beautiful city ugly.

As the original blog states, the city is becoming less fun as establishments shut down, and the "anti-fun league" move in.

I believe that the lack of cool night spots in Winnipeg has less to do with the prim and proper types, and more to do with urban decline in general.

O.K... Well, Bill, I don't mind discussing this topic with you at all. As you know there are some with socialist views and some who are more conservative. No doubt the discussion here would end up being a long presentation of quotes from various sources that support your argument and mine. So, I don't know if we will come to any resolution that we can both accept, but, I think people will enjoy the banter no matter what side of the argument they choose to back.

As this is your website, I'm venturing into your own territory, so be fair, even if you do not agree with my perspective.

Money doesn't grow on trees. It is earned though hard work. As Canadians we are are fortunate to live in a country that has social services to support people in need, but someone has to earn money and pay taxes to support the Government programs.

The current economy is plagued with problems. Some involve those who are dependent on government handouts, but even more of the problem revolves around people borrowing more money than they can handle. The practice of buying on credit is pushing our economy to the brink of a Depression.

You've argued, that to point the finger at those who are on assistance is unfair, and that the blame should be placed on big businesses and banks who loan out money to poor people.

What I've argued is, poor people are not without blame. Although the banks are offering huge loans to people, consumers are willingly accepting those loans. I consider myself to be poor, but being poor I am not stupid. I am doing my best to avoid bank loans.

So, it won't be hard to find various sources of information that support a more conservative view.... I scanned the web to find a few quotes...etc.

The first is this on Winnipeg from a website :http://www.fcpp.org/publication.php/470

"The reasons for the city’s bad performance are many and varied. However, it is safe to assume it is related to a low-growth policy mix that besets the entire province: a politicized economy, high taxes, a focus on wealth distribution, not creation, all propped up by outside transfers. The list goes on."

I would assume the author is refering to "Wealth Distribution" as government intervention in the form of EI, Welfare, etc.

Statistics Canada Posts data on the Labour Force Participation rate on it's website. I copied their table here for reference.

                        OCT/08 OCT/09
Participation rate (%) 70.6 71.0 0.4 …
Unemployment rate (%) 4.8 6.0 1.2 …
Employment rate (%) 67.2 66.7

If I'm reading this information correctly This October 71% of the population were part of the active labour force. Of these 6% were currrently Unemployed and looking for work, and 66.7% were working.

This means that there are approximately 30% of the population not working. These likely include some who cannot work, the elderly and infirm. But, it also includes people who refuse to work. This means there is about 1/3 of the population who do not contribute financially to the city though taxes.

Although I cannot speak for every individual in the city, I do wonder about what this 30% of our population does with all that spare time. It would be interesting to see what the breakdown of this is. How many of these non-working people are otherwise able to work, V.S. those who are Unable to work due to age or handicap.

So, I'm interested to reasearch this further, and find more information, even if it supports your argument. I believe we are looking at the same information, but our interpretation of the data is different.

That's hilarious!

I wouldn't usually use the word "hilarious" about someone who got beaten up and tazered. In fact, I would have said that under no circumstances would I use the word "hilarious", given that I deplore violence.

Now I know there's one exception, where "hilarious" seems to be an appropriate response. Like you said — karma!

Just a side note "Steve Anderson used to be a volunteer firefighter in Reno, Texas until a background check uncovered a felony conviction of burglary of a habitation, which occurred over 20 years ago."

This guy is not qualified to be a pastor or a firefighter.

Oh I forgot to mention that mcauleysworld also keeps beating me over the head with the words of Richard Siegmund Lindzen an American atmospheric physicist and Alfred P. Sloan Professor of Meteorology at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The same Lindzen who according to Ross Gelbspan in Harper's Magazine "... charges oil and coal interests $2,500 a day for his consulting services; his 1991 trip to testify before a Senate committee was paid for by Western Fuels and a speech he wrote, entitled Global Warming: the Origin and Nature of Alleged Scientific Consensus, was underwritten by OPEC."

Read Gelspan’s article it is interesting - http://dieoff.org/page82.htm
In it he talks about the “small band of skeptics” including Dr. Richard S. Lindzen, who “helped to create the illusion that the question is hopelessly mired in unknowns.” Again mcauleysworld are you in the majority? I think not.

Ps Mcaulay you should find out how to read your blog stats, before you send me spam on how much I have helped increase your readership. :-)

Oh I forgot to mention his sermon was entitled "Why I hate Barack Obama"

What ever happened to 1 John 4:8 KJV He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love.

Anderson has a lot of reading to do this is what happens when a paster doesn't read the bible enough.

You know what Anderson although I think you're an Idiot,

I will PRAY FOR YOU !

Why because you have a serious mental problem that only the true love of God can cure. Trust me Anderson you don't know the love of God that you preach about, of this I am sure.

I've actually given up on cable and actually don't have it. There was one reason why, Aurora's (where I live) local cable provider sold out to Rogers. Rogers put out letters asking subscribers in the area to call a special number and transition over. After several phone calls to Rogers nobody could tell me what "Basic Cable" channels were included. I also couldn't talk to a manager there as they were never available for every reason under the sun. I even attempted leaving my cellphone number but the lady couldn't record that information even after I repeated it 5 times.

I blogged about it under this label on my blog here: http://michaelsuddard.blogspot.com/search/label/Life%20without%20Cable

What do I do without cable?

1. Read books - Currently reading Brian Mulroney's biography a thousand page behoemouth well worth the read if you are into Canadian Politics.

2. Read newspapers and do crosswords - Metro is a free newspaper in many Canadian cities and my wife and I have become good crossword fanatics. I even polish off the word search in the weekend Toronto Star or Toronto Sun.

3. Nintendo Wii - hours of fun, nuff said.

4. Clean the apartment - doesn't it need doing?

5. Excercise - Take a walk together outdoors - hark! Actually see the neighbours!

6. Blog - I'm working on blogging more.

7. Save a wack of dough - NO Cable bill = $35.00 plus in savings per month for basic cable. Also means I don't have to worry about Rogers screwing up my cable bill. My Internet bill on the otherhand...

8. Surf the internet - Local news programming from accross Canada is available on the CTV and CBC stations websites. I imagine Canwest (Global) is similar. CBC.ca also has the National and other news programs loaded on a daily basis.

Lots to do, so who really needs cable anyway?

Now that I have freed us from the great Mcauley reiteration machine, (by use of a filter) I can say that if you want to debate please try and address the previous comment, rather than just spouting off. Mcauley not once addressed the letter written to the senate. Why? Because no matter how many independant letters or reports or facts he pulled out of his hat (or Datamined) he could not argue with the fact that this letter proves a large number of science organizations stated that those independant letters and reports are, "inconsistent with an objective assessment of the vast body of peer-reviewed science." I even attempted to get him to respond to the letter on his own website and he wouldn't, so to avoid giving him a soap box for his collection of disenting nonsense I pulled his plug. I don't mind zealots but when they move from debate to preaching, I think it is time to pull the pulpit out from under them.

A religious belief is one based on faith in something that cannot be proved. I just pointed out that 18 of the most influential science organizations (see above) have stated that "Observations throughout the world make it clear that climate change is now occurring, and rigorous scientific research demonstrates that the greenhouse gases emitted by human activities are the primary driver. These conclusions are based on multiple independent lines of evidence, and contrary assertions are inconsistent with an objective assessment of the vast body of peer-reviewed science."

Since you seem to hold to your belief in a "religious" way, ignoring the words of the vast body of science, and rather picking a handful of disenters, it is not worth debating with you. Peer-review was established so consensus could be established, it is the way science works. Also as to Data-mining I haven't looked for a bunch of various sources online I have used one source that speaks for the scientific community, which as I have pointed out states "contrary assertions are inconsistent with an objective assessment of the vast body of peer-reviewed science."

http://www.agu.org/outreach/science_policy/pdf/Climate_Letter.pdf

And yes I will keep beating you over the head with this letter as while it does not prove Global warming it does prove that your statement that “The vast majority of “scientists” in the world reject the “Warming” theory as “bunk” and extremely bad science,” Is total Rubbish.

You are supporting a minority view and this letter proves that to be a FACT!

PS. I love how you keep commenting here and I keep approving your comments while on your website you did not approve my comment which included the letter I mentioned above. The best way to fight I guess is to put a muzzle on your opponent how fair of you. Okay since this is the way you want to play Just try to post another response here.

Bill, I invite your readers to visit my site and search under the simple heading "Global Warming" to see how many "scientists" dispute to your near religious belief ........ and to review the overwhelming physical evidence calls into question the existence of "Global Warming" - Bill, just because it gets warmer when the sun comes up in the morning and it gets cooler at night when it goes down - well Bill, that isn't "Global Warming" is it - My site contains articles (and is fully linked to the actual data) from MIT, Harvard, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute, Canada's National Post (which reported that snow and ice cover is greater now than at any time since 1966 - http://www.nationalpost.com/opinion/columnists/story.html?id=332289),
US National Climatic Data Center, Australian Physicist and NASA Astronaut Phil Chapman, Sciene Daly, Science & Technology Magazine, Dr. Syun Akasofu International Arctic Research Center, University of Alaska, Dr. Will Happer, Princeton, the liberal Boston Globe and the "Green" Discovery Channel and dozens more.

Your Canadian friends might like the articles concerning the "Great Lake Freeze" and the fact that temperatures in the Great Lakes region are the lowest in almost 5 decades, having long corrected from the 1990's mini spike in temperatures.
